Blame Google for Wasting Company Time

If your company wants to come down on you for wasting valuable work time playing on the computer, Google might have had a little something to do with that, at least for a few days earlier this month. More specifically, Google Doodles was the culprit, as the site’s home page celebrated Les Paul’s 96th birthday, with a playable doodle.Google oftern celebrates events like birthdays with doodles that play around their name, but for the guitar legend’s birthday, Google created a playable guitar-like doodle that broke all records for visitors. According to Extreme Tech, 740 million visitors to the site spent an average of 26 seconds each, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you do the math, it ends up being a total of 5,344,444 hours, and over 2 days, works out to 10.7 million man hours. If you figure an average wage of $25 an hour, it ended up costing $268 million dollars in lost productivity.

What?!!? That’s ridiculous. First of all, how many people do you know that make $25 an hour? I saw the doodle, and I spent about 15 seconds trying to figure out what the hell it was, then it was out of my mind forever. So for myself, let’s see…a high salary of $3 an hour, divided by 60 minutes, divided by 60 seconds, equals less than 1 cent. Not a lot, to say the least.

I spend more time than that waiting for my computer to boot up. Speaking of which, it’s almost finished now, so I better get back to work. Valuable company time’s a wastin’!

Besides, there’s some stuff I need to check out at Funny or Die.
