Five guitars belonging to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were stolen recently. The robbery took place on a soundstage in Culver City, where the band are rehearsing for their upcoming tour, Petty’s website reported Friday (April 13).

Culver City police are investigating the theft, and the band has set up a special e-mail address,, for anybody with information on the situation. A $7,500 reward has been offered with no questions asked to anyone with information leading to the recovery of the guitars.

Two of the stolen guitars, a 1967 Rickenbacker 360 12-string and a 1965 Gibson Les Paul SG TV Junior, belong to Petty. The other guitars were Scott Thurston’s 1967 Epiphone Sheridan, Mike Campbell’s signature model Dusenberg, and Ron Blair’s Fender Broadcaster, a rare model made between 1949 and 1951 and was the prototype of the Telecaster.

Although the Heartbreakers are most commonly associated with the jangling sound of Rickenbackers, they Heartbreakers, as lovers as well as creators of classic rock, are known for having a wide assortment of rare and valuable instruments. Last week, Campbell unveiled a 15-part video look at his collection.

All of us at Ultimate Classic Rock hope this case is resolved soon and that the guitars are soon returned to their rightful owners.
