When you’re a part of the biggest blockbuster franchise of the hour, what do you do on your time off? Well, if you’re Chris Evans, you set up a secret escape room and prank people into yelling “Hail Hydra!” in public places.
It’s hard not to think that Marvel’s latest promo for Captain America: Civil War was inspired by the fan-made “Road to Civil War” super-cut from a couple of weeks ago. Like that video, the official “The Past Is Prelude” teaser takes us through the evolution of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, from their first solo films all the way through Avengers: Age of Ultron and into Civil War. It’s much shorter than that fan-made super-cut, but it still packs an emotional punch.
Superhero films are really into the whole “choose a side” thing this year. Batman and Superman, the X-Men and Apocalypse (okay, that’s easy — Oscar Isaac and Michael Fassbender’s side, obviously), and the most brutal super-battle of them all: Iron Man and Captain America. Civil War is coming, and while the trailers have given us plenty to consider in the fight between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, Marvel’s latest batch of images gives us more to contemplate.
With Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans promising a big surprise on Jimmy Kimmel Live, we knew it had to be something special — that something is the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War. Not a teaser, but an actual, full trailer, dramatically highlighting the growing divide between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, which will divide the Avengers and pit them against one another in what could be Marvel's most epic film yet.
If The Avengers feel like one big, slightly dysfunctional family, it's because they are. And that applies to off-screen as well as on. Playing off that chemistry, the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron — Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner — appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and played a rousing game of Family Feud.
