It shouldn’t be very surprising that a guy who killed his own father in cold blood is a dark, effed up dude. Yet, this latest news about Kylo Ren somehow paints a picture of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens villain as even more disturbing than we originally thought.

There’s a scene in The Force Awakens where Kylo enters the holding chamber where Rey is being kept prisoner. It sorta feels like he knows her, or at least knows of her, so he removes his mask to confront her and extract the details of Luke Skywalker’s whereabouts from her brain. As he removes his helmet, he sets it down on a table with a pit of ash in the middle. The table is never referenced again, but it’s not like Kylo just hangs the helmet on a hook; it feels important that he placed it on this spot. So what is this pile of ash? Turns out it’s the charred remains of all the people he’s killed.

If you thought Kylo Ren was f—ing around, it is now abundantly clear that he is NOT f—ing around. Let’s just stop for a second to appreciate that Kylo Ren has collected the corpses of everyone he’s killed (minus his dad who is probably still falling through space), had them incinerated and collected their ashes into a pit that he uses as a base for his helmet. I think we should stop questioning his dedication to the Dark Side.

Director J.J. Abrams explained the significance to Entertainment Weekly saying, “The backstory is, that that table has the ashes of the enemies he’s killed.” It turns out that shot was actually used for a previous scene, when Kylo talks to the helmet of Darth Vader.

He originally had his mask off the first time we shot [the Vader scene]. Then we reshot it with his mask on, but we had that shot which I loved and thought was so cool of the mask being slammed down into that ash. So that shot was stolen from the scene that we had changed and put into the scene with Rey.

It’s an interesting bit of editing, but let’s please not bury the lede: Kylo Ren is crazy f–ed up.
