Every new photo of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie is like a glimpse into a land of video games designed by David Cronenberg for maximum terror. Is this a movie for kids and gamers or a horror film about the disturbing adventures of an anthropomorphic hell monster?

First, live-action Sonic was just weirdly buff and in shadows. Then he was buff and also sitting, legs akimbo at an impossible angle, on top of the Golden Gate Bridge. Both of those early posters obscured Sonic’s facial features, focusing instead on his muscular limbs (Sonic is famously swole after all) and his red sneakers. A bunch of new photos and images from the movie and various marketing materials have leaked online, and these give us a pretty clear look at what movie Sonic is. And it is pure nightmare fuel...

You’re the only one, Havoc’s Dad!

By the way, if you’re curious what Sonic’s creator, Yuji Naka, thought of this guy, he said on Twitter (via Eurogamer), “Is this a Sonic movie? I feel that it is important to look at the whole body visual of Sonic and head body and stomach. Did you not get a little more balance?” All in all, I guess it could be worse.

If the new Sonic just looks off to you and you can’t quite put your finger on why, this fan made illustration that turns the new guy back into the original character, is a pretty good side-by-side comparison of the changes made (mostly around the eyes, hands and feet):

Is it too late, to make Sonic look more like the guy on the right? Because that looks good to me. The guy on the left ... he seems like someone who would star in Tales From the Crypt episode about a kid who plays video games so much he becomes trapped in one forever.

Starring James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Natasha Rothwell, Tika Sumpter, Neal McDonough, Adam Pally and Jim Carrey, Sonic the Hedgehog opens in theaters on November 8.
