Even when the nation's economy was struggling in recent years, it was good to see that Texas managed to stay above the fray with better unemployment rates than the national average. Lately however, our rate in Texas is actually a little higher than the national average.

Texas Workforce Commission has reported that the Texas unemployment rate is down slightly to 4.8% from 5% the previous month. The national unemployment rate in May was 4.3%.

State officials say the lowest rate in Texas is Amarillo at 3.1% while the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area has the highest at 7.5%.

On a local level, Victoria County's unemployment rate was down from 5.1% to 4.8%; Calhoun from 6% to 5.6%; Dewitt from 5.5% to 5.1%; Goliad from 5.7% to 5.1%; Jackson County went up from 4.1% to 4.2%; Lavaca from 3.9% to 3.8%; and Refugio was down from 5.7% to 5.4%.
