Seniors in the Crossroads Need A Little Extra Love This Christmas

There are seniors in the Crossroads who need a little love and warmth for the holidays.

My heart can not handle the image of any of my grandparents, or any grandparents for the matter, ever being alone in the cold, but sadly, across the Crossroads, there are senior citizens who are experiencing just that.

Thankfully the United Way of the Crossroads is there to help. But they need you too.

The United Way of the Crossroads is again hosting the Senior Giving Tree project, benefitting meal recipients through Meals on Wheels Victoria, Community Action, Community Connections in Lavaca County, and Gonzales County Senior Citizens Association.

The project has been renamed from Be A Santa For A Senior, in an effort to be more inclusive of people of all traditions.

Nearly 1000 seniors are served by these agencies and will receive gifts this holiday season with your help because no matter the name, the project is a wonderful way to care for the seniors in our community who need it the most.

Giving love to these seniors can easily be incorporated into your holiday shopping.

I was shocked to hear that when seniors were asked to choose from four basic gifts those that chose blankets were most likely living without electricity. Furthermore that those seniors likely had visitors to their homes and Meals on Wheels might be the only people these seniors have a chance to visit with.

Your gift will not go unnoticed or underappreciated.

Kari Breitschopf, Executive Director of the Gonzales Senior Citizens Association said of last year, “My phone was filled with so many thank you calls. The recipients loved their gifts. They were perfect and made so many people so happy. I got teary-eyed a few times listening to them. It's just amazing the impact this project has had.”

Here is how you can bring happiness and warmth to those that need it most.

Grab a card from one of the many " Senior Giving Trees" around the Crossroads.  Seniors chose from items like blankets, slipper socks, gloves, and toiletry baskets and your shopping list will include two of those items they chose. Then you return the card and the unwrapped gifts back to the Senior Giving Tree location.

Unwrapped gifts to be returned to a tree location by December 14th.

Can you afford more than one card? Can your business? That would be amazing!

Businesses and groups can also adopt a group of seniors rather than pulling wish lists from a tree.
