Rush broke the news during the final segment of his nationally syndicated show Monday afternoon. He said he suspected something was wrong during his birthday weekend, January 12th, and that doctors at two medical institutions confirmed his lung cancer diagnosis on January 20th.

Assuring his audience that he plans to return to the microphone, Rush said he will be stepping away at times to undergo or cope with treatment. He talked about the bond he has with his audience - both longtime and new listeners - and his desire not to make things about himself, but also not keep things from his audience.

"So this has happened, and my intention is to come here every day I can and to do this program as normally and as competently and as expertly as I do each and every day, because that is the source of my greatest satisfaction professionally, personally," Rush said. "I’ve had so much support from family and friends during this that it’s just been tremendous. I told the staff today that I have a deeply personal relationship with God that I do not proselytize about. But I do, and I have been working that relationship tremendously, which I do regularly anyway, but I’ve been focused on it intensely for the past couple of weeks."

"I hope I’ll be back Thursday," Rush concluded. "If not, it will be as soon as I can, and know that every day I’m not here, I’ll be thinking about you and missing you. Thank you very much."

Rush's announcement comes at the 1:39:15 mark in the video below.
