In an effort to stay ahead of potential safety issues, the Victoria Independent School District has announced new rules about bags being carried into athletic events for the upcoming school year.

According to a V.I.S.D. news release published yesterday, the new rules indicate that only clear and non-clear bags below 5 & 1/2 inches by 8 & 1/2 inches will be allowed into any district facility. These include the District Aquatic Center, the District Events Center, Memorial Stadium, Patti Welder Stadium, and both gyms at Victoria East and West High Schools. The policy also applies to any organization that uses these facilities.

The new policy also dictates that spectators can not bring in camera cases, briefcases, backpacks, cinch bags, large purses or other similar items.

Officials say the new restrictions are not in response to any particular incident or threat but is an effort to improve overall general safety.
