Ride sharing services have been all the rage in larger cities for some time now, and hearing about them on the news, I wondered if and when they would come to our fair city. How about now?

The service known as 'Lyft' is here and has started operating, albeit without a city permit.

Operating differently from taxis or other ride sharing services, Lyft uses a smartphone app, which allows users to click and pay for their ride with the touch of a button. Victoria city officials say the company must go through the permitting process before they can operate legally.

According to a company press release, drivers for Lyft go through a background check which includes a review of their driving record before they can be certified. Their vehicles must also pass a safety inspection.
