If you know anything about horror movies, then you certainly know the iconic 1974 film Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The hulking killer known as Leatherface was played by Gunnar Hansen, who passed away at the age of 68.

USA TODAY reports he passed away from pancreatic cancer at his home in Maine over the weekend.

His agent Mike Eisenstadt confirmed his death, adding that his character "is one of the most iconic evil figures in the history of cinema."

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was directed by one of the great horror directors Tobe Hooper. It was loosely based on true events of a family of grave-robbing cannibals.

When I was in high school, it was drive-in staple for my friends and I, who went to see it whenever it was showing. It's low-budget, grainy feel was simply horrifying. It still remains one of the most brutal movies ever filmed, and it set a new standard for films of that genre.
