The latest red band trailer for the intense new thriller Green Room is here, and don’t you dare underestimate that I-word — the latest effort from director Jeremy Saulnier is incredibly, unnervingly intense. And not the kind of in-your-face intensity you’ve become familiar with in your average action-thriller. This movie is a master-class in creating and sustaining tension, and for all the gory details, there’s a weird elegance to the film’s pacing and tone. You can get a hint of that in the new trailer, though you may want to wait and experience it for yourself in the theater.

Green Room stars Anton Yelchin and Alia Shawkat as members of a punk band whose gig at a skinhead hole in the wall takes a hard left turn when they become unwitting witnesses to a murder. Locked in the club’s green room with the murdered woman’s friend (Imogen Poots), the group finds themselves confronted with inescapable violence — made all the more formidable by the arrival of the eloquent and dangerous club owner, played by Patrick Stewart.

Make no mistake about it: Green Room is brutal, but those moments of violence aren’t the selling point; instead, they punctuate the prolonged, agonizing intensity. If you’re feeling particularly antsy to see the film, do yourselves a favor and check out Saulnier’s previous film, Blue Ruin, on Netflix.

Here’s the official synopsis for Green Room:

Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon.  What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see.  Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the club’s depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Patrick Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise.  But while Darcy and his henchmen think the band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain’t Rights prove themselves much more cunning and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown.

Green Room also stars Macon Blair (Blue Ruin) and Mark Webber, and hits select theaters on April 15. It will expand nationwide on April 29.
