For those of you that travel US 59 or 77 on a regular basis, the speed limit is going up. That's right, you may now put the pedal to the medal for an additional 5 miles per hour, or at least as soon as the signs are put up reflecting the change. The Texas Department of Transportation said that after traffic engineering studies were concluded, it was determined that the 5 mph increase was justified. Basically, what it came down to was the fact that drivers were already going that speed anyway.

The increase affects U.S. 59 from Victoria County through Jackson County and up to Wharton County. The U.S. 77 increase starts south of Victoria through Refugio County.

hat 5-mph jump isn't something Victoria resident Maria Gonzalez said she needs herself, but it might help some people avoid speeding tickets down the road.

According to one Victoria resident, "70 is good, but, even when I drive the speed limit, I have cars pass me. Maybe if it is higher, people will drive the limit."

Yes 70 is good, but in the words of Spinal Tap's Nigel Tuffnel, "75 is 5 better, isn't it?"
