Nickelback will record an album of Slayer covers if bassist Mike Kroeger gets his way, he said.

He insisted that, despite the music the band is known for, all four members were fans of heavier artists, and the only thing standing in the way of a tribute LP was time.

Asked by Wall of Sound if Nickelback might consider doing a “much heavier record” in the future, Kroeger said, “I would love to. Metal is what makes me go; it’s what I listen to without fail. If we could actually sink in and do a metal album, all four of us would love it.”

He described the band as “metalheads at our core." “We all know everything about the Big Four – Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer," he noted. "I would do a Slayer cover album if I could. That’s where my heart lies. There are just never enough hours in the day to do everything, but let’s just say I wouldn’t count it out.”

Last year, Kroeger said Nickelback wouldn’t stray far from their trademark pop-rock, because they didn’t want to alienate their fans.

“They’ve developed a taste for what we do, so we don’t want to go too far and shake them off,” he argued. “On the previous album, No Fixed Address, we explored more diverse territory stylistically. Some of that was received well and some of it was not – and that’s by our people – so you come to expect it when you push the envelope that far.”
