Did you know that a car is stolen in Texas every five and a half minutes? That's a staggering figure, and it's no fun when the vehicle happens to be yours. The Victoria Police Department can help prevent that from happening, with the H.E.A.T. (Help End Auto Theft) event this weekend.

H.E.A.T. is a statewide vehicle registration program sponsored by the Texas Department of Public Safety that assists law enforcement officials in identifying stolen vehicles.  Any vehicle owner in Texas can register their vehicle in the H.E.A.T. program. A vehicle registered with the program will have decals placed on the front and rear window. Statistics show that most vehicles are stolen between the hours of 1:00am and 5:00am., and these decals authorize law enforcement officers to stop the vehicle during that time  anywhere in Texas.  The vehicle ownership will also be verified anytime the vehicle passes from Texas into Mexico.

The event scheduled for Saturday from 9-noon, will be at Parkway Baptist Church at 4802John  Stockbauer, will also include VIN Etching, which makes vehicles less desirable to steal, because then thieves have to replace all the windows and get rid of the glass, which means more cost to them. VIN etching also adds resale value to a vehicle, and some insurance companies even offer discounts.

You will need to have a current driver’s license; automobile insurance and the registered owner must be present. H.E.A.T. registration and VIN etching is also offered through the Crime Prevention Unit located in the Victoria Mall by appointment.

For more information contact The Victoria Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at (361) 485-3808, or stop by the Office located in the Victoria Mall next to Chic-fil-A.
