Victoria Generals Go to 9th to Cut Down Acadiana Cane Cutters

Victoria Generals

The Victoria Generals broke a 5-5 tie by scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take down the Acadiana Cane Cutters 8-5 at Fabacher Field in Lafayette, Louisiana last night, the first game of a two-game series.

Romeo Cortina launched his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the top of the first inning, a solo shot, to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.

The Cane Cutters grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Texas A&M products Mitchell Nau and Logan Taylor.

Trey Wall turned in another solid start for the Generals, but did not record a decision.  Wall allowed just two runs on six hits in six innings with three strikeouts.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jordan Camel blasted a grand slam to right field to put the Generals ahead 5-2.  It was Camel’s first home run of the season.

The Cane Cutters answered back with a two-run Connor Barron home run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Generals lead to 5-4.  Jordie Hein then delivered an RBI single to score Blake Brom to tie the game at 5-5.

The Generals quickly loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning.  J.B. Moss then drew a walk to score Jace Reese and put the Generals back in front 6-5.  Alvaro Rondon then smacked a two-run single into centerfield to score Brandon Bohanon and Jacob Hubert to make it a 8-5 Generals lead.

Juan Cortina picked up the win in relief allowing just one run on one hit with one strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Rondon, Cortina, and Reese each had two hits apiece to lead the Generals offense.

With the win, the Generals improve to 24-26 on the season and 7-13 in the second-half.  The Cane Cutters fall to 28-23 overall and 14-7 in the second-half.

The two teams will meet again on tonight at 7 for game two of the series.
