It looks like the Americans are in medal contention once again at the Olympics in Rio. This time for most members robbed at gunpoint.

Turns out Team USA swimmer Ryan Lochte and 3 other teammates were celebrating a birthday at a club in Rio. They all left the club at the same time and entered a taxi. The taxi stopped to get gas and the group were robbed at gunpoint of their wallets and valuables.

At first, the IOC spokesperson denied the rumors saying the story "is absolutely NOT true".

That, in essence, was calling Lochte's mother Ileana a liar as she was first to report the robbery.

The robbery appears to have taken place after Lochte went to a club with a Brazilian swimmer. "Thiago Pereira and his wife Gabriela Pauletti were in Club France, the French house in Brazil, and they were celebrating the birthday of a friend in common", Flavio Perez, Pereira’s spokesman, said. “Lochte was also in the same place, commemorating the same birthday. Ryan and Thiago are friends. Thiago and his wife left earlier, they left alone, the two of them. Thiago and his wife went back to their hotel. Then Thiago, on finding out what happened, called Ryan. Ryan is well, and Thiago said that the robbery, according to Ryan, was in the taxi. The taxi was robbed.”

Also, there has been video posted on multiple social media sites that shows petty thieves walking around Rio in broad daylight snatching purses, wallets and backpacks right out of people's hands. The crime rate is unreal considering the Brazilian government can't afford to pay some of it's police officers.

In another case a sports photographer was robbed of about $40,000 worth of gear and his vest which included his credentials. A couple of days later the thief showed up at a venue and tried to use the stolen credentials to gain entrance. However, luck would have it, the photographer from whom he stole the items was at the same entrance of the same venue at the same time and was able to identify the man who was arrested.

Goes to show you that you have to take anything the IOC says with a HUGE grain of salt. Remember, they're in the business of making money too. Luckily there's only 1 more week left and people can start to leave that place. Rio should have never been selected to host the games. Between a raging crime problem, feces and bacteria infested waters for the rowing venues, and Olympic village plumbing issues, it's a wonder why it WAS ever chosen. But then again, it's the IOC we're talking about.
