It's been described as one of the most dangerous locations in the area but, hopefully not for long, as construction begins today on an expansion of lanes on U.S. Highway 77 between FM 1685 and U.S. Highway 87.

The project will expand a stretch of the highway that runs over the Guadalupe river from 2 lanes to 4.

The $25 million dollar project was labelled a high priority by the Victoria Metropolitan Planning Organization, due to safety concerns. Official figures show at least 4 accidents with fatalities have occurred on the bridges since 2008. Preliminary work begins today but the actual construction is set to begin on the project in about 2 months. Officials say completion is expected to take about 2 & 1/2 years.
