It’s been a rough road for D. J. Caruso’s haunted house horror The Disappointments Room — with Relativity Media going bankrupt, the film has had a difficult time grabbing a release date after it was removed from the studio’s release schedule. Finally, it’s been announced that The Disappointments Room will have a wide release in September, and you can watch the first trailer right now.

The official plot synopsis is pretty cut-and-dry, as far as haunted house flicks go:

The psychological thriller follows a woman (Beckinsale) who moves into a new house with her 5-year-old son only to discover a secret room within the attic where unimaginable horrors are accidentally unlocked.

The trailer shows Kate Beckinsale and her son moving into a large house in the countryside with headless statuary in the gardens, chasing ghostly children on the stairs (oooh), finding a locked door to a hidden room that doesn’t appear on any blueprints (ooooooh), and obsessively trying every key she can find in the house while her son says, “Don’t get sick again, Mommy” (OOOOOOHH). It’s standard horror-house fare, but Caruso proved himself an imaginative and versatile director in 2007 with his Rear Window homage Disturbia. His subsequent projects — Eagle Eye and I Am Number Four — were less successful, but The Disappointments Room could be the small-scale indie that shakes his career back on track. His latest is the upcoming xXx 3, which looks awesome, but it’s nice to see him going back to his roots with smaller projects.

The Disappointments Room with be in theaters on September 9th.
