Van Halen Taps Kool and the Gang as Tour Opener

Much like they did for the 2007-08 reunion tour, Van Halen has crossed genres in selecting an opening act for their 2012 tour. According to Rolling Stone, none other than Kool and the Gang will open select shows when things kick off on Feb. 18 in Louisville, Ken.

While the choice is somewhat of a head-scratcher, the unconventional pairing could be a lot of fun, depending on which set Kool bring, the funk of the ’70s (check out ‘Spirit of the Boogie‘) or the less memorable R&B of the ’80s (‘Joanna‘).

New Van Halen Album Now Rumored for Early 2012

For fans of Van Halen‘s original lineup, the band’s last three decades or so have been punctuated with more than a few frustrations and disappointments, including their brief reunion with David Lee Roth in 1996, bassist Michael Anthony’s rudely handled dismissal, and an overall lack of new music since a pair of new tracks were appended to the double-disc ‘Best of Both Worlds’ compilation way back in 2004.

Roth has been back in the band since 2006, with rumors of a new album persistently surfacing over the last five years. The buzz has grown louder than ever this year, and for awhile, it looked like this might finally be the year Van Halen came back — but it looks like we’ll have to keep on waiting.

It’s a Small World for Ex Van Halen-ites

It all comes full circle eventually, or so it seems for a couple of former Van Halen members, who are playing together... sort of. Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth as Van Halen's singer. After their falling out, Sammy was replaced by former Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone. Sammy became good friends with original Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, and when the Red Rocker departed, eventually Anthony followed Sammy to the Waboritas, and also into Sammy's latest band Chickenfoot. Sound enough like a soap opera yet? Wait, we're not finished yet.
