Paul McCartney is alive and well, but a well-placed rumor in 1969 had some thinking otherwise. On September 23, 1969, the Northern Star newspaper of Northern Illinois University published a story claiming that McCartney had been killed in a car crash a few years earlier and had been replaced by a look-alike. A radio station in Detroit picked up on the story and ran with it. Within a month, the story had gone global and Beatles fans worldwide were collectively scratching their heads.
Some day, the world is bound to run out of cool and interesting Beatles memorabilia to auction off. But in the meantime, it looks like the very first copy of 'The White Album' to ever be pressed to vinyl is about to find a new home.
Decades after the Beatles turned a stroll across the road -- Abbey Road, that is -- into one of the most widely copied images of the rock era, police in Calcutta, India are using the Fab Four to try and promote better traffic safety.
Although they have a deserved reputation as one of indie rock's weirdest bands, the Flaming Lips have a classic rock heart. Literally.
