Hurricane researchers at Colorado State University predict that this hurricane season which runs from June 1 to November 30th, will be slightly below normal. They predict 13 named storms this year, and six will reach hurricane status. Of those, they predict two major hurricanes, or storms with winds over 111 miles per hour.

At 8 a.m. EST Thursday, the National Hurricane Center issued hurricane and tropical storm watches for the northern Gulf Coast, as tropical storm Karen gains strength in the southern part of the Gulf of Mexico. According to projections below, the storm will not affect the Crossroads.

1. The Cocktail: This New Orleans drink made from rum and fruit juices was invented by Pat O’Brien in the 1940s. Interestingly, O’Brien only concocted it because he needed to get rid of a lot of excess rum. He even gave them away for free to visiting sailors. The drink is now a staple of Mardi Gras and Cajun-flavored parties across the country.
