Styx Sues Record Company Over Alleged Stolen Royalties

Mary Ouellette,

According to Styx, their record company has been less than honest with forking over their royalties for the past several years. In fact, the band alleges that the record company went as far as creating a “phony business model” just to avoid paying them – talk about a grand illusion.

TMZ reports that Styx recently filed a lawsuit (under their corpation Gelderstick LTD) against A&M Records contending that the proper income earned from digital downloads and ringtones has not been paid to the band for quite some time. To be even more detailed, the band stated that “for every one dollar the band has received from A&M they should have been paid anywhere from two to five dollars.” To put things in perspective, that’s a whole lot of phones harmoniously ringing to the tune of ‘Come Sail Away’ that Tommy Shaw and company are not being compensated for.

Although the band is suing for unspecified damages it sounds like it could equal a big pay day should they win the suit. With a discography spanning back to 1972 and a bevy of monster singles from ‘The Best of Times,’ ‘Come Sail Away,’ ‘Babe’ and ‘Lady’ just to name a few, their arsenal of music runs quite deep.

Styx doesn’t seem to be letting the lawsuit slow them down at all though; they recently announced a new leg of their Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express tour with REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent. The tour kicks off in April with dates spanning through May. Check out the full list of dates below to find out when the tour is scheduled to hit your town.
