Soundgarden fans will have to wait a little bit longer for the band’s first album since 1996. The “reunion” album had a spring release date loosely attached to it, and singer Chris Cornell made the press rounds saying so. Now, Cornell has revealed the new album, the band’s first since ‘Down on the Upside,’ has been bumped to fall of this year. We’ve been waiting long enough — what’s a few more months? Patience, young Skywalker, right?

Cornell let fans down gently by making the announcement on Triple M Radio this week.

The singer also said that the album isn’t nostalgic or retro, so don’t expect ‘Louder Than Love Revisited’ or ‘Badmotorfinger II’ or ‘Superunknown Reloaded.’ Not in the slightest!

He admitted, “I don’t even know what that would be,” when asked if the band would be looking to its past and its roots on this brand new disc. He also said, “It sounds like Soundgarden, but I wouldn’t say it’s similar.” We love it when rock singers of massively popular bands get all cryptic when discussing new music.

Nostalgic or not, similar or not, fans are definitely looking forward to this next sonic chapter in Soundgarden’s illustrious career.
