Slash was a big-time presence at this year's South by Southwest, not only staging the inaugural tech-based 'Slashathon,' but also participating in a Jimi Hendrix tribute performance and speaking with FUSE about the release of his upcoming album.

"I'm thinking … well, I'm more than thinking. I'm pretty sure, September," said Slash to FUSE when pressed about a possible release date for the upcoming disc. The band has been in the studio laying down new material since the beginning of the year.

As for the 'Slashathon,' the guitar great was one of the judges (along with Bitorrent's Bram Cohen and Microsoft Rackspace's Robert Scoble) judging the tech-based competition in which developers gave full demo presentations based on their music promotion related ideas. For seven hours straight, design teams came up with their applications on the spot.

The first place winner created 'Slash TV,' in which any user in any place can create a rock video for a new album from any mobile phone within 30 seconds. The app allows you to promote an experience with stages and digital stickers to record your video. The winning entrant received a Gibson guitar autographed by Slash, $1,000 and will allow Slash to use the winning hack for promotion of his next album.

The second place winner created 'Pretune,' which automatically promotes your album by allowing the crowd to reveal the song(s) bit-by-bit by sharing via Twitter or providing their email address.

The third place winner generated 'Crowdroar,' which offers real-time feedback from the stage on how people are reacting to your music via a loudness meter that shows up on a Google Glass display.

As for Slash's performance at South by Southwest, he joined the Jimi Hendrix Celebration at Butler Park Thursday night. He took the stage to rock out such Hendrix classics as 'Foxy Lady,' 'Red House,' 'Purple Haze,' 'All Along the Watchtower' and 'The Star-Spangled Banner' with Wayne Kramer, Rusty Anderson, Dave and Phil Alvin, and Robby Krieger.
