Serbian Village Issues Real Public Health Warning About Imaginary Loose Vampire

serbian vampire health warning

Guess this means ‘True Blood’ has finally made it to syndicated Serbian television.

A local council in the western municipality of Bajina Basta, Serbia issued a public health warning this week, after an abandoned water mill on the Rogacica river collapsed. Why? Well, because it’s where Sava Savanovic (above) was believed to have been living. You know, Sava? The vampire? Because vampires are non-fiction?

Folklore says that Sava hid out in the mill, waiting to prey on passers-by who came in search of grain. When the mill collapsed rumors spread that Sava, now homeless, was ticked off and about to go on a blood-sucking rampage.

People in this town don’t think of this story as legend, though. Mayor Miodrag Vujetic told reporters that everyone in the area knows that vampires are real:

People are worried, everybody knows the legend of this vampire, and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people. We are all frightened.

Naturally, the town issued the very rational, calm, level-headed health warning, urging villagers to hang garlic on their doors and windows to keep the vampires out, and make sure crucifixes are in plain sight throughout their homes. That is just ridiculous — Everyone knows Vampires have to be invited in, anyway.
