Sammy Hagar knows how to throw a party — and for more than 20 years now, he’s been using his birthday as a great excuse to throw an unforgettable annual rager at the Cabo Wabo Cantina. He’ll follow tradition this fall with a four-night stand that kicks off October 7.

Unfortunately, Sammy’s original plans for this year’s Birthday Bash fell through with the untimely death of Ronnie Montrose, who passed away at the age of 64 on Saturday (March 3). As he revealed in a Rolling Stone eulogy for his former bandmate, Hagar and Montrose were planning on reconvening the old Montrose lineup for the event.

“We were talking a lot, because we were planning a Montrose reunion for my birthday in Cabo this year,” recalled Hagar. “I said to Ronnie, ‘Come on, man. We’re all getting old. Let’s do this again while we can.’ And he was in, we were all in.”

It would have added up to an epic birthday show for Hagar, who had more than just a Montrose reunion planned. “I was planning on coming out with Montrose, doing the whole first album, then going in with my other band, and then bringing Chickenfoot out,” he said. “I was going to try to [cover] my whole four decades for the fans that night, without nobody knowing.”

Even without a full-fledged Montrose set on tap, Sammy’s Birthday Bash is bound to be a good time — so if you can clear your calendar for October 7, 9, 11, and 13, and afford the cost of traveling to Cabo San Lucas, mark your calendar!
