As part of his ongoing musical adventures, Robert Plant traveled to Mali in 2003 to perform at the Festival in the Desert. His time there was filmed for a documentary called 'Zirka.' You can watch the first episode in the eight-part web series above.

In the footage, shot mostly by Plant himself, the rock god leaves for the desert, where he performed on the same bill as Ali Farka Toure, one of Africa's most famous musicians before his death in 2006. Along the way, he sees late-night dancers in the street, interacts with villagers and visits a temple with a shrine made from discarded guns.

"It was a journey of revelation — one of the most illuminating and humbling experiences of my life," Plant told Rolling Stone. "[The trip] took us from the scurry and bustle of our world into the homeland of the Tuareg, the Sahel of Mali, Timbuctoo, and north to Essakane. A journey that could only reinforce the power and the great gift of music across and between cultures ... sharing outside of language."

A new episode of 'Zirka' will be uploaded to Plant's YouTube channel every Monday for the next eight weeks.
