We know that Paul McCartney is taking part in the Summer 2012 Olympic Games by closing out the Opening Ceremonies, but his interest in the games is not just in passing.

The onetime Beatle has taken to his Twitter account to offer a photo posting and a supportive message for the athletes as the ceremonies near. The singer stated, “All of us wish our U.K. teams in the Olympics and Paralympics the very best of luck. We hope they enjoy this great competition and create great memories for themselves and us all and at the same time bring home a bagful of lovely medals. All the best, Paul McCartney.”

The singer will take part in the ‘Isles of Wonder’ production that will open the Summer Games. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ filmmaker Danny Boyle is directing the event, but many of the details are being kept under wraps. The one thing that is known is that McCartney will close out the production.

In addition to the official ceremony, there will also be Olympic Games opening performances from Duran Duran, Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, and Paolo Nutini. The closing ceremonies will feature headliners the Who, with comedian Russell Brand and music acts Take That, Emeli Sande, Annie Lennox, George Michael, Ray Davies, the Pet Shop Boys and Madness taking part.
