Nintendo Overlord Kicks Vita While It’s Down

Executives who work for gaming giants tend to speak in dull platitudes about the competition, so it’s always refreshing to see a suit not only take the gloves off, but pick one up and smack a rival in the face with it.

Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto — the guy who created Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong — busted the PlayStation Vita’s rapidly deflating balls.

Popping off to Edge, Miyamoto busted out some non-rhyming free-style to clown Sony’s slow-selling portable:

“It’s obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it. But I don’t really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product.”

Even after a promising beginning – 325,000 units sold at launch in Japan and 600,000 in its first couple days in the US – Vita sales have slumped. In Japan, the Vita has frequently been outsold by the Wii and even its own predecessor the PSP.

We sure bet Sony would love to tell Miyamoto “lots of things he can do with it.” And we sure hope the company has someone identify at least one of those things publicly. If not a real exec, maybe that sassy, trash-talking minx Kevin Butler.
