New Thin Lizzy Album Is ‘Pretty Damned Likely’

It’s been more than a quarter-century since the passing of Thin Lizzy vocalist Phil Lynott. Now it appears that there might be new music on the way from the Lynott-less edition of the band, which has kept his legacy alive since reuniting in 1996.

Guitarist Scott Gorham says that a new Lizzy album is “now pretty damned likely,” echoing what he previously told Billboard when he said that the number one question from fans was “when will Thin Lizzy make new music?”

Gorham says that the recently solidified lineup, featuring vocalist Ricky Warwick and guitarist Damon Johnson (Brother Cane, Alice Cooper) finally has brought necessary stability to the band, which also features longtime Lizzy mainstays Brian Downey on drums and Darren Wharton on keyboards.

Ricky Warwick “writes lyrics in the same Irish storytelling way [as Lynott],” Gorham tells Classic Rock, and that’s a songwriting style that jives well with the compositional work ethic practiced by the rest of the band.

He’s aware that there’s a lot on the line, putting out new product with the Thin Lizzy name on it. While he says it’s possible that the new album could surface this year, they’ll be taking their time to make sure that it’s done right.

What would Phil think of a new Thin Lizzy album? “Phil was a player, always out there on a dime. He’d want to keep the name going forward, so I’m pretty sure he would approve.”
