The first trailer for Ghostbusters offered a sizable preview of Paul Feig’s upcoming reboot, giving us a peek of the team’s proton packs in action, the new ghosts and that goofy receptionist who kind of looks like Thor. But we still haven’t seen the film’s elusive villain, played by Neil Casey — and we still don’t know much about the guy at all, really. Thankfully, recent comments from director Paul Feig and screenwriter Katie Dippold help shed some light on the reboot’s big bad, giving us a better idea of what the ladies will be up against.

Neil Casey plays Rowan, the antagonist (or one of them, maybe) of the Ghostbusters reboot. We’ve yet to see him, and little has been said about the part he plays opposite Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. But in an interview with CinemaBlend, Dippold briefly explains his position in the film:

So our villain, so to speak, is a very smart genius type himself… I don’t want to give anything away… I guess I’ll say they kind of meet, they’re very smart people, they’re scientists and there is someone who is equivalent to them, but he, whereas they want to do good, he does not.

That definitely helps us understand who Rowan is — even just that small description paints a picture of a guy who might be a bit resentful of the new ghost-busting quartet. In an interview with Empire, Feig explains a little further:

Rowan is the ultimate loner. A regular New Yorker whose goal is to bring some things back to this world. He wants to trap ghosts, but for a different purpose…

“Ultimate loner” makes Rowan sound a bit more dangerous than your average mad scientist. As seen in the trailers, a spooky variety pack of ghosts are unleashed on New York City, and it appears as though Rowan is responsible for the mayhem.

One more thing: In his CinemaBlend interview, Feig also reveals that there have been talks of connecting his reboot to the original Ghostbusters film:

I think they’re trying to figure out how to connect the old one with this. I’d like, if it’s a multiverse, something to base off this universe that we’re going right now.

We know that Sony has been considering another Ghostbusters reboot, with names like Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt tossed around over the past year or so. While that reboot appears to be on hold for the time being, the idea of a multiverse that might tie several Ghostbusters worlds together is an interesting one — and it’s not the first time we’ve heard it. Previous reports indicated that Sony was considering a couple of reboots with plans to have the teams crossover in a third film. Feig’s comments above imply that the crossover would also include the stars of the original film.

In the meantime, Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 15.
