Motley Crue Stickman Tommy Lee Bids Farewell to Drum Roller Coaster
There may be no one as inventive as Motley Crue‘s Tommy Lee when it comes to setting his drumkit in motion. His drum rollercoaster has thrilled audiences around the world during the band’s most recent tour cycle, but Lee is ready to move on to something different.
The drum set took its final 360-degree spin Saturday (May 25) in Atlantic City, N.J., but not before Lee gave it a proper send-off. The drummer alerted fans over the weekend that he was saying goodbye to the kit in a couple of online tweets, one saying “Tonight the 260 drum rollercoaster will roll it’s final time!,’ followed by another promising, “Dont you all worry! Just wait til ya see what crazy I got for ya next!”
He later added a lengthier post in which he revealed exactly how the band said goodbye to the popular stage prop. His post read, “A bottle of Champagne smashed on the coaster last night as it sets sail for the scrap yard! Ha! Man we’ve given so many people the thrill of a lifetime together! all the crazy f—ers who’ve I’ve strapped in with me who had the balls to ride with me and all the spectators that have watched from a far! Cheers to ya all! This one’s for the history books kids! We did it! On to design the next Spectacular!”
Motley Crue will enjoy some time off from touring this summer, playing only a handful of dates. Nikki Sixx has previously stated that he’s working on a new Sixx: A.M. album that he expects to arrive this year. Plus, Motley Crue have been working on new music after teasing fans with the single ‘Sex’ last summer. The group will return to Las Vegas for a second residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino running Sept. 18 – Oct. 6, at which point we could potentially see Tommy Lee’s next drum invention.
