Mom Arrested for Attacking Son’s Bully — Is It Fair?

If you mess with the bull, you get the horns, but if you mess with a cub, you get the Mama Bear. That’s just what happened in Florida this week, when a mother was arrested after attacking the teen who bullied her son.

Felecia Phillips, 35, went to her son’s bus stop at 7 a.m. on Wednesday in order to ensure her son’s safety and ended up confronting a student, 17, from Flagler Palm Coast High School about the fight he had with her son the day before.

An argument ensued and Phillips pushed him via his face. The teen retaliated, slamming her to the ground as the bus arrived. Phillips was not deterred and chased the teen onto the bus, grabbing his hair while other students tried to pull him away.

The bus driver intervened, claiming Phillips was a trespasser and had to exit the vehicle.

Phillips chose vigilante-style justice since her son had been bullied for years.

“He called me a [expletive], and I did push him in his face. I just want you to leave my son alone,” Phillips said. “He’s not that type of kid to go around messing with other kids. You guys are walking around all day, drinking, smoking, breaking into people’s houses, stealing cars and everything. My son is trying to get an education. Leave him alone.”

Phillips, who called the teen “disrespectful,” is charged with child abuse and trespassing on school property. She was booked on $2,500 bond. The teen may not be charged for slamming Phillips to the ground as he was acting in self-defense.

While we commend and support Phillips desire to protect her son at all costs, she should have involved school administrators or authorities before taking physical action. She has every right to look out for her child’s safety, but she should have left it to people with the official capacity to help, as opposed to reacting with her fists at first.
