Watch Metallica’s First-Ever Complete Live Performance of ‘The Frayed Ends of Sanity’

Hard as it might be to believe, there are still a few songs from the Metallica catalog that the band has never performed in concert, although that list no longer includes ‘The Frayed Ends of Sanity,’ which made its long-overdue live debut on May 28.

Drummer Lars Ulrich earlier teased the possibility of bringing the relatively obscure ‘…And Justice For All‘ track into the set list for the show, which found the band joining the Sonisphere Finland lineup along with Slayer, Mastodon, and others. While he admitted that Metallica’s current ‘By Request’ tour hadn’t led to as many new additions as he might like, he seemed excited about the Finnish fans voting for this particular ‘…And Justice for All’ track.

“We’ve never played ‘The Frayed Ends of Sanity’ before,” Ulrich pointed out. “We’re going to have sit down and spin that one around for an hour or two. We carry a rehearsal room with us wherever we go. Give us an hour and we can learn any song in our catalog. We like to make the set list real wacky and change it up as much as possible, but in 2014 the fans are picking the songs.”

The fans are also still buying the band’s records, as evidenced by the news that Metallica’s ‘Black Album’ just crossed the 16-million mark, making it the best-selling LP of the SoundScan era, which started in 1991. An impressive milestone no matter how you look at it, and one worth celebrating while watching the ‘Frayed Ends of Sanity’ video embedded at the top of this post.
