SNL has one heck of a Season 42 finish ahead, to follow Louis C.K. with Jimmy Fallon, Chris Pine, Melissa McCarthy and The Rock, and live on every coast at that. Of all those names, however, McCarthy might build the most anticipation, as the Sean Spicer impressionist says she’s already squirreling away notes for the next appearance.

McCarthy will follow her two prior guest spots as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer with a full hosting gig on May 13, in the process becoming yet another female entry into the SNL Five-Timers club. There’s every chance between now and May that Spicer makes such a fool of himself as to warrant McCarthy’s early return, though the Ghostbusters star tells USA Today she’s quietly preparing in the meantime:

I’m just watching and observing. I (hope) for everyone to have clarity and better things to say. And in the meantime, I just squirrel away notes.

McCarthy also explained the genesis behind the original sketch, which has since become the SNL YouTube channel’s most watched video (h/t UPROXX):

It was [SNL co-head writer Kent Sublette’s] idea. He called me when he knew I was in New York, so he gets all the credit for that. At first I thought, ‘What are you talking about?’ And he’s like, ‘I just think we have to have an outlet for how so many people are feeling. […]

It’s what SNL does so well. It’s political satire. It’s there to skewer and kind of be a watchdog in a playful way of what’s actually happening. It’s just that perhaps we have gone further in reality than we thought we ever would. So I’m glad that SNL still is there to lovingly poke the bear.

Spicer’s main critique of the impression has been the exaggeration of his gum habit (suffice to say, his boss was less enthused overall), but how might the third visit with ol’ Spicey top things? Are their safety concerns with a jetpack podium?

All these answers and more, in the next few weeks.
