Man Freed From Prison After Serving 20+ Years for Marijuana
Jeff Mizanskey walked out of prison in Jefferson City, Missouri just before 8 a.m. Tuesday after serving 21 years for non-violent marijuana offenses.
He'd originally faced life behind bars.
Governor Jay Nixon commuted Mizanskey's life without parole sentence in May. After a recent parole hearing, Mizanskey and his family learned he'd be released.
"It's about time. I wish they would have done it 15 or 20 years ago, but I'm glad it's happening," Mizanskey said after leaving prison. "I spent a third of my life in prison, one third. That's a shame. This is America. I just can't believe it happened."
We can' believe it happened either. 20 years for weed? Yet violent, multi-time offenders often get probation? The justice system in this country works most of the time. However, this would be a perfect example of excessive punishment. 20 years? Really? In any case I'm sure Jeff has one hell of a case of the munchies.
