‘Looper’ Gets the Job Done — 10 Things To Check Out This Week

FilmDistrict

It’s fall TV premiere week! You know what that means: Lots of crap you really don’t want to watch will be hitting the tube starting tonight. But don’t worry bros, we’re here to help you find the good stuff. Check out some of our must-watch fall premiere picks below.

Also new this week: A promising sci-fi flick from a great indie filmmaker hits theaters, and the biggest summer movie of them all finally debuts on Blu-ray. Read on for 10 Things to Check Out This Week:

Looper

‘Brick’ and ‘Brothers Bloom’ director Rian Johnson brings his singular storytelling style to the world of science fiction with ‘Looper.’ The film’s mind-bending premise is sure to get nerd butts in seats: An assassin is paid to kill people sent back from the future. Things get tricky when he’s forced to kill his future self and botches the job. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis play the young and older versions of the assassin in a film some critics are already calling a classic of the genre. ‘Looper’ opens Friday in theaters.

FOX

‘Fringe’ Season 5 Premiere

It’s the final season of one of the most challenging, rewarding and ballsiest shows on TV. Last season, ‘Fringe’ freaked out its fans by erasing its own history and building a newer, stranger world for its characters to inhabit. This season, the show jumps several years into the future to tell a twisty sci-fi story about rebellion and, of course, the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism. ‘Fringe’ returns to the tube on Friday, Sept. 28.

‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ on Blu-ray and DVD

The biggest movie of the summer finally hits home video on Tuesday. The ‘Avengers’ Blu-ray release is loaded with deleted scenes, commentary by director Joss Whedon and more. Watch Cap, Iron Man, Thor and The Hulk smash the baddies over and over again.

‘Bond 50: The Complete 22 Film Collection’ on Blu-ray and DVD

It seems like there will never be a truly complete ‘Bond’ movie collection, since Hollywood keeps cranking out ‘007’ flicks. But this release is the closest thing we’re gonna get for quite a while. ‘Bond 50’ offers all 22 Bond films on Blu-ray or DVD, plus more than 130 hours of bonus features. That’s a whole lotta Bond-age!

‘Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1’ on Blu-ray and DVD

This Tuesday, DC Comics offers another dark and interesting animated take on one of its most beloved and absorbing comic books ever. This feature-length film, based on the influential Frank Miller-penned limited series ‘The Dark Knight Returns,’ follows Batman as he heads out of retirement to punish the brutal scum threatening to take over Gotham for good.

‘Dexter’ Season 7 Premiere

Will ‘Dexter,’ Showtime’s once great serial killer drama, rebound from last year’s dismal sixth season? We’re rooting for the show, especially since things finally seem to be heading in a new direction with (Spoiler!) Dexter’s sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) finally learning Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) secret at the end of last season. The blood starts flowing again on Sunday, Sept 30.

‘Homeland’ Season 2 Premiere

Showtime’s still great suspense drama returns for a second season. ‘Homeland’ was one of the most gripping new shows to hit the tube last season. Here’s hoping season 2 will inspire the same must-watch anxiety as season 1. ‘Homeland’ premieres Sunday, Sept. 30, following ‘Dexter.’

‘The Big Bang Theory’ Season 5 Premiere

The comedy about nerd culture may appeal to, well, all culture these days, but ‘The Big Bang Theory’ still delivers the gut laughs on a pretty consistent basis. Plus, Kaley Cuoco! The show returns to CBS on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Badass Digest

Film critic/nerd/engaging beardy fellow Devin Faraci hosts Badass Digest, a smart, insightful and fun new movie geek show on the Cinefix YouTube Channel. Check out Devin’s interview with ‘Looper’ director Rian Johnson below:

Robert Englund in ‘Lake Placid: The Final Chapter’

This Syfy Saturday night movie looks terrible. Of course it looks terrible. But we’d rather watch this and support the OG Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund, than, say, sit through that dull ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ remake again. So grab some booze, turn on the tube, and watch Englund fight mutated crocodiles in a TV movie sequel to a Bill Pullman B movie.
