11 people in India were mauled by a leopard after the animal wandered into a village in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, ‘Today‘ reports.

Six villagers, a policeman and four forest officials were hurt as they attempted to drive the animal into a wildlife sanctuary.

The leopard was far from cooperative, however, and lashed out at those trying to corral it. Forest officials were even forced to scramble up trees and seek refuge on top of a Jeep in order to avoid attacks by the large cat.

Those who were injured are reportedly recovering, but the leopard, who was beaten back by villagers wielding knives, batons and stones, later died from its wounds after being tranquilized.
