As previously reported, the project former Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord was working on before his untimely death is now set to see the light of day. ‘Concerto For Group and Orchestra’ picks up the theme put into play by Lord and Deep Purple back in 1969.  This updated version was recorded at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall by Abbey Road Studio‘s crew and features the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Also guesting on the album are Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, guitarist Joe Bonamassa, and Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse.

“Over the years since leaving Deep Purple I’ve played it over 30 times,” Lord said, “And in 2000 I did it well over 30 times with Purple on tour. I’ve been honing the piece. It’s a marvelous and exciting prospect to have the definitive recording of the definitive score.” According to Lord’s website, the new release will be accompanied by a specially filmed documentary.

Deep Purple first performed ‘Concerto for Group & Orchestra’ at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969. Conducted by the famed Malcolm Arnold, the performance was repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and Deep Purple.
