The creators and founders of the Muppets, the Jim Henson Company, are the latest to sever ties with Chick-fil-A over the fast food chain’s public stance on gay marriage.

The Jim Henson Company posted a message on their Facebook page on Friday announcing the split, which has since received thousands of “likes” and “shares” across social network sites:

The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-fil-A to GLAAD.”

Chick-fil-A has long been associated with the company’s founding Christian values, but controversy struck in the wake of their CEO Dan Cathy’s explosive interview on July 16th with the Baptist Press. Cathy was asked if he was opposed to marriage equality and he responded, “Guilty as charged.”

He added, “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit….We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”

The Jim Henson Company’s decision to sever ties with Chick-fil-A is the latest in a string of public repercussions to hit the Southern-fried fast food chain since the Baptist Pressexposure of the company’s gay marriage stance. Boston mayor Thomas Menino announced last week that he would use his power to ensure the Atlanta-based chain didn’t open another restaurant in his city.

The Jim Henson Company had been in partnership with Chick-fil-A on a promotion deal that provided Jim Henson Creature Puppets for children’s meals in a make-your-own puppet kit.
