Is Thanos Officially Booked for ‘The Avengers 2′ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’?

Marvel Studios

All the non-comic book lovers were scratching their heads at the end of ‘The Avengers‘ when an image of the Mad Titan Thanos popped up in a bonus scene after the credits. Now, this big guy is the only thing anyone’s talking about when on the subject of ‘The Avengers 2.’ We all assumed that moment was Joss Whedon’s unofficial statement that Thanos would be our new villain in the sequel, but has it been made official? And what about the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ movie? Will Thanos be in that too?

After chatting with Jim Starlin at the Montreal Comic-Con, Armand Rock of Cosmic Book News reports that the comic book writer and Thanos creator confirmed that his cosmic villain will indeed be wreaking havoc in the upcoming ‘Avengers 2.’ Starlin reportedly stated that a deal is already in place for the character to appear, which comes as no real surprise.

What about his rumored involvement in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ though? It was only recently made official that James Gunn would be directing the project and rewriting the comic book storyline, but does that mean Thanos will be cut out? Not according to Starlin. Although he stated that he’d “appear” in the film, set for a 2014 release date, there’s no telling if he’ll be the central focus.

There’s also been some talk, perpetrated by Chris Evans himself, that Captain America will be making a similar cameo appearance in ‘Thor 2‘ (dubbed “The Dark World”) before hitting up his own adventure in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’ Although Starlin’s statements are probably accurate, there’s no telling how truly involved he is in the movie process for both ‘The Avengers 2′ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy'; however, it the news does follow this new Marvel trend of having major characters popping up as guests in other hero movies, and it does give the Captain America/Thor rumor more power.

Marvel has set ‘The Avengers 2′ to hit theaters May 1, 2014; ‘Thor: The Dark World’ on November 8, 2013; ‘Captain America: The Winter Solider’ on April 4, 2014; and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ on August 1, 2014.
