Want to lower your risk of breast cancer? Go easy on the cocktails. New data indicates that having even one alcoholic drink a day could raise your chances of getting the disease.

After data from more than 100 studies was analyzed, European researchers concluded a single drink per day raised a women’s breast cancer risk by four percent, while having three drinks or more on a daily basis boosted the risk by 40 to 50 percent.

The new findings back up previous research showing a link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer, leading the study’s authors, led by Helmut K. Seitz of the University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany, to conclude, “Women should not exceed one drink [per] day, and women at elevated risk for breast cancer should avoid alcohol or consume alcohol occasionally only.”

But Dr. Stefan Gluck, a professor at the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center, feels the alarm may be unfounded. While he doesn’t advocate over-consumption, he said we should be more concerned about other risk factors, like smoking and obesity, both of which have been found to raise the risk of cancer by 30 percent.
