It seems like I'm always seeing people complaining that their property taxes are too high. Given the fact that all property owners have to pay them, about all we can do is appeal for a lower rate through the proper channels. All that being said, how does Texas compare to the rest of the nation?

According to the personal finance website WalletHub, Texas is among the highest in the nation. Based on an effective real estate tax rate, Texas property owners pay an average of 1.90% or, about $3,386 based on a home value of $179,000. The state's median home value is $136,000 and that amounts to $2578 in annual taxes. I guess part of the reason is that we don't pay any state income taxes. Who pays the lowest rate sin the country? Hawaii, where the annual taxes on a $179,000 home amounts to only $487 a year,
