Those who follow Device and Disturbed frontman David Draiman know that the rocker is well-studied on his Jewish history. Now he’s using his celebrity to help bring the story of holocaust survivor Leah Johnson to a wider audience.

Draiman has teamed with local Hasidic Rabbi Yosef Levertov to bring Johnson to Austin to share her dramatic experiences in the Bielski brothers’ bipartisan brigade, which were famously portrayed in the movie ‘Defiance.’ Johnson was only 16 when the German Nazis stormed her Belarusian hometown of Lida and set it on fire. She and her family found shelter in the forest amongst the bipartisan brigade.

For Draiman, Johnson’s story hits close to home. Both of his material grandparents were survivors of Bergen-Belsen. He’s written songs about the holocaust and the United States Holocaust Museum has featured the vocalist in their ‘Voices on Anti-Semitism’ podcasts. Draiman will be on hand to both introduce Johnson and share his own family connection with the holocaust.

The event is scheduled to take place June 4 in Austin at the Dell Jewish Community Campus. For further information, to buy tickets or to make a donation, check out the Chabad Austin website.
