New York Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter was helped off the field after fracturing his left ankle in the top of 12th inning of his team’s 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Saturday’s Game 1 of the American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium. The injury will sideline Jeter for the remainder of the postseason, Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said after the game.

One batter after Delmon Young’s run-scoring double put the Tigers ahead 5-4, Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta hit a ground ball to Jeter’s left. The Yankee captain fell to the infield while grabbing the grounder, but he stayed down in obvious pain after flipping the ball toward second baseman Robinson Cano before time was called.

Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue attended to Jeter, carrying him off the field without allowing any weight on his left leg. Jayson Nix replaced Jeter at shortstop. Infielder Eduardo Nunez, who was left off the ALCS roster, could take Jeter’s spot.

Earlier in the game, Jeter recorded his 200th postseason hit. New York trailed 4-0 heading to the last of the ninth, but Yankee Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer off Detroit closer Jose Valverde to tie the game. Ichiro Suzuki had hit a two-run homer off Valverde earlier in the inning to close the gap.
