Dave Grohl, Producer Butch Vig + More Appear in ‘The Smart Studios Story’

Dave Grohl, producer Butch Vig and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan are among the rockers who will hopefully appear in a new documentary titled ‘The Smart Studios Story.’ The reason we say “hopefully” is because the project is still in the works as director Wendy Schneider attempts to raise funds via a Kickstarter campaign.

The studio, which operated between 1982 and 2010, was founded by Vig and his Garbage bandmate Steve Marker in Madison, Wis. And while music fans are now well aware of what the Sound City studio meant to the music world thanks to Dave Grohl, Schneider is seeking to shine a light on all the great music that came from the Midwestern digs.

Vig recalls of the rather rundown looking building, “I think people initially thought it was a crack house.” But despite the looks, Smart Studios played host to records from Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Cheap Trick, Beck, Depeche Mode and, of course, Vig and Marker’s band Garbage among others.

Dave Grohl says in a trailer that Schneider produced, “Butch was one of the first producers to come out of the underground that really wanted to turn your noisy garage band into something that the whole world would love.” Corgan adds with a smile, “It’s pretty fascinating when you think of Smart Studios. All the magic moments that happened in basically this little s–thole.”

Schneider is seeking to raise $120,000 for the project and has raised $26,000 as of this posting. There’s still 23 days remaining until the March 30 end date for the Kickstarter campaign and those interested may donate at this location. As with most Kickstarter campaigns, there are also rewards for donations that include passes to the film screening and a dinner with Vig and Marker.
