Unless you keep a close eye on the Austin, Texas film scene, you might not have known that audiences were treated to a special advance screening of Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness this weekend as part of the annual Butt-Numb-A-Thon. The December film marathon  —  hosted each year by Ain’t It Cool News founder Harry Knowles  —  often features an enticing mixture of classic genre movies and upcoming releases, and this year, both Verbinski and lead actor Dane DeHaan showed up to give the audience a special holiday treat. If Twitter is to believed, the film is extremely disturbing and absolutely insane. Sounds perfect.

Those of us who weren’t in attendance received quite the consolation prize, though: a brand new trailer for the film (via The Playlist). As is the trend with movie trailers these days, this second trailer is less an ambient mood piece and more of a step-by-step introduction to the story and the characters. Now we get a better look at the health clinic as well as some mysterious family backstory that probably won’t at all come into play for our main character. Nope, probably not at all.

As we noted in our write-up of the previous trailer, Gore Verbinski is one of those few directors who can make a reasonably expensive horror movie movie  —  hello, The Ring—  without watering down any of the intensity or graphics. A Cure for Wellness also seems to be Verbinski’s consolation prize for never being able to get that Bioshock adaptation off the ground. Weirdly, this might end up being the best of both possible worlds. Verbinski gets to make a straight horror film without having to dumb down the visuals for the broadest possible audience; meanwhile, he still gets to take a deep dive into the retro-futurism of the Bioshock universe with some truly shocking visuals in the trailer. Speaking only for myself, this is the movie of 2017 I am the most curious to see.

Here is the full plot synopsis for A Cure for Wellness:

An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.

In addition to DeHaan, A Cure for Wellness will also star Jason Isaacs and Mia Goth and hit theaters on February 17, 2017.
