Dallas Cowboys’ Player Arrested In Teammate’s Death

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent was arrested on a charge of intoxication manslaughter Saturday after the car he was driving crashed, killing his passenger, Jerry Brown Jr., a linebacker on the Cowboys’ practice squad.

Police allege that Brent, 25, was driving at a high speed just after 2:20 a.m. local time in Irving, Tex. on Saturday morning when the vehicle hit a curb and rolled over. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brent was still in custody on Sunday pending $500,000 bail. If Brent is tried and convicted on the manslaughter charge, the second-degree felony carries a sentence of two to 20 years in prison. He had a prior DUI conviction in Illinois in 2009.

George Milner, Brent’s attorney, described the bond amount as excessive. He was petitioning the team for payment of the bail to free Brent.

A moment of silence to remember Brown was held before the Cowboys game against the Bengals in Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon. Brown and Brent were college teammates at the University of Illinois.

It was the second consecutive week a player death occurred on the day before a full NFL schedule. Last week, Kansas City Chiefs’ linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend before committing suicide at the team’s practice facility.
