Classic Rock's rough winter gave fans very few reasons to smile. The season was littered with stories of accidents, break-ups, bands deciding to either stop recording or touring – and, most of all, deaths.

Although the deaths can more or less be chalked up to the fact that the generation that created classic rock has entered its senior years – and it's amazing some of them survived as long as they have given the punishment they did to their bodies – it did seem like there was a curse on our heroes throughout the winter of 2015-16. How bad was it? Not only did we lose two founding members of Jefferson Airplane, they died on the same day.

So we've created the above gallery in the hopes of ridding ourselves of all these bad vibes once and for all. You'll read about the deaths of such legends as Lemmy Kilmister, David Bowie and Glenn Frey, and that past and present members of the Rolling Stones, Funkadelic, Cream and AC/DC are dealing with some very serious illnesses. Meanwhile, bands as diverse as the Moody Blues, Motley Crue, Rush and Crosby Stills & Nash reached critical moments in their career over the past few months.

Fortunately, we have a lot to look forward to as classic rock's rough winter fades, beginning with brand-new music from the likes of Cheap Trick, Bon Jovi, Santana, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Ace Frehley (which features his former Kiss bandmate Paul Stanley on one song). In addition, there appears to be a similar thaw in the war of words between Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar, which may (or certainly may not) pave the way for Hagar to return to Van Halen – but at least it's good news. Perhaps best of all, this spring promises the blossoming of a long-awaited return of Slash and Duff McKagan to Guns N' Roses.
